Intro to Western Armenian (Scholarly & Curiosity Tracks)

We offer one-on-one, virtual sessions for all curious minds interested in learning Western Armenian. For scholars, we focus primarily on grammar instruction and specialized vocabulary building, quickly equipping you with the linguistic structures and resources you need to begin reading, understanding and translating materials from Western Armenian. For all others, we customize our course to your language goals and work on building your ability to confidently read, write, speak and/or understand Western Armenian.

Getting to Know Your Ancestral Dialect of Armenian

On the eve of the Armenian genocide, over 100 regional dialects of Armenian were spoken across Eurasia. Today, most of these dialects are extinct, but speakers and linguists have left us with a trove of materials through which to learn about them. This one-on-one, three-session course introduces you to the basics of your ancestors’ regional dialect (the dialects of Van, Kharpert, Moush, among many others) and provides you with resources to explore them further. Ultimately, this course offers you a window into how your ancestors spoke in day-to-day life and helps you forge a stronger connection to your roots.

Crash Course in the Armenian Alphabet

Our five-session, one-on-one crash course introduces you to the shapes and sounds of the Armenian alphabet. It also familiarizes you with common fonts and handwriting styles. It is designed for 
  • Turkish speakers and Ottomanists interested in unlocking the mysteries to be found in Armeno-Turkish materials (Turkish written in the Armenian alphabet)
  • Western Armenian speakers who never had the opportunity to gain literacy in Armenian
  • Eastern Armenian speakers interested in learning Western Armenian pronunciation and classical orthography 

$400 for the five-session course

Reading & Translation Support

We provide one-on-one, virtual language support to academics, researchers and translators actively working on reading and translating texts from Western Armenian. During these sessions, we review your work and offer non-judgmental guidance, explanations and suggestions, delving into the text with you to decipher particularly challenging passages. 

$60 per hour-long session

Handwriting Support

We offer virtual sessions (group and one-on-one) for researchers looking to improve their facility with handwritten Armenian. During these sessions, we take your handwritten sources as our focus, exploring the particularities of the script used in them and developing a source-specific handwriting guide for your future use.
